Leaks: Google To Slash 1,000+ Employees

by [FS] on October 23, 2008

Got a tip that Google will slash 1,000+ employees sometime within the next week. We can not confirm this yet but are monitoring this very closely.

Per TechCrunch (here), Google uses shady ad tactics to edge out competitors.

At a time like this, I can understand why they would do that - to survive (hello!)

I work @ google.
Last week they let go of 500 recruiters.

Supposedly they will be letting go of +/- 1000 employees.

This should hit early next week @ the latest.

I can confirm that Google is in major lay-off mode since August. The new CIO received commands from management to cut unncessary costs which he’s taken to mean cut everyone except maybe 50 people to run all of Google’s projects.

Note, you don’t want to hire most of those laid off. Most permanent Googlers were “managing” projects (e.g, taking 4 day weekends and showing up to work only to eat the free food and showed up barely to 1 or 2 meetings per week). The temps that were there for more than a year learned the same laziness and worthless work ethic.

If you’re looking for people with no real experience and who think it’s okay to steal a tray of bottle water provided by the company for everyone to drink… then go ahead and hire a Googler. Otherwise, be really careful and interview really in-depth about what they can and cannot do (and verify it).

The world is different today compared to the past (compared to even just a year ago). The constant march of technology makes it possible for a smaller work force to do virtually the same job as a larger workforce. As white collar employees are handed pink slips, an employer like Google, a bank or a brokerage may be prudent to generously retain their e-mail records. The records are a valuable asset to the employer, relating to intellectual property, project management, customer relationships and more. –Ben http://legal-beagle.typepad.com/wrights_legal_beagle/2008/10/retain-e-mail-of-former-employees.html

Hiring laid off GOOG employees is like making tits useful on a bull.

You think there’s any reason why the new nickname for google employees now are googtards?

Googlers can do puzzles (dynamic programming etc). Google used the same trick as Microsoft to basically discriminate and select young people from good schools who could afford to become expert puzzle solvers since they were not working to start with. But can they work or code? Not likely. Google was not interested in their work abilities. Google is the latest pump-and-dump scheme of Wall Street, like Enron. Now that GoldmanSachs and others have dumped all the stock, and the truth about Googles one-trick-pony income must be divulged, Google has no need for these ‘fake’ employees, who didn’t bring in a penny for Google anyway. So, the poor Googlers getting the boot will have to figure out life for themselves, but, hire them only if you are ready to wait a few years before these naive people learn how to make a living for real. And by the way, if you haven’t done so already, dump Google stock soon. It going to end up around 20 bucks.

I think their contractors are crazy and have not much qualification - And its the same “work ethics” - laziness to sum ip up all. Living on the campus isnt my idea of work. I’d like to keep private life exactly that and away from a business. Thats what in the long time would lead to successful life. :) Yeah, Googlers are googtards anyway…

They reported a profit for the last quarter and their 2nd quarter was worse. They realized that they put too much restrictions on ad quality and hired many people to avoid and kill the adwords accounts. They came to learn that money is more important than their quality they are the biggest anyway so why bother hiring many people to conduct ad quality stuff.

To those Google Recruiting folks, I have created a networking group called Google Staffing Alumni in Linkedin. Admission is granted to only current or former Google staffing professionals, whether full or part-time. The intent was for appropriate networking and job shares where plausible. go to http://www.linkedin.com and search the groups.
May provide helpful leads to job opportunities.

Best,

When did this become a recruiting blog?

Amie December 10, 2008 at 10:24 am

No kidding! You recruiters are a bunch of VULTURES. Are there really jobs or are you trying to fill your ATS?

Johnny December 10, 2008 at 2:37 pm

There are jobs out there! As a matter of fact even the companies that are laying off are still hiring. All they are doing is trimming the fat. They will layoff 15% and then hire back another 5% who are better and cheaper now due to the recession.
